If Nobody Reads the Code, Tests Become the Last Human Oversight

If humans stop reading most code, tests quietly become the last oversight committee with attendance. That sounds efficient until you remember committees only work when someone writes the agenda, checks assumptions, and notices what never made it into scope.

A passing suite proves the software satisfies a set of expectations; it does not prove those expectations were wise, complete, or connected to reality. If product intent shifts faster than test intent, you can ship beautifully verified nonsense.

So yes, tests are increasingly the final checkpoint. But they cannot be the only one. We still need periodic human judgment on architecture, invariants, and blast radius—or we’re just automating confidence while deprecating understanding.
